9/11, 9/20 and Gandhi’s Puzzle: Fighting Postmodern Terror/ Modern Warfare with Peaceful Alternatives
This paper is an attempt to understand the conditions of the world as different peoples and states turn more to the prospects of violence as evident in Afghanistan, Palestine, Philippines, Nepal or India/Pakistan, among others, and a way out of this tyranny of violence.

Jonathan Power, TFF associate, Jan. 10, 2002
Poverty could breed more bin Ladens
It’s an undisputable, well-researched, fact that poverty, particularly when it exists in a society of gross inequalities, breeds violence, crime and the urge to deal out deadly punishment on conventional society.

Jonathan Power, TFF associate, Dec. 18, 2001
Will the lost children of the street be the next bin Ladens?
Despite fifty or more years of the Third World foreign aid industry the rich countries have still not got their priorities right. Problems of this magnitude left unattended will come back to us. Will these children, once adults, revenge their lost childhood in awful, bloody ways too? I fear many of them will.

Evelin Lindner, TFF associate, Dec. 12, 2001
The lessons of humiliation
An unconventional, deeply personal account of how the author came to study humiliation, write a second doctoral thesis and live as a global citizen. To reach the maturity that permits us to give up the idea of revenge and work to reconciliate and forgive is about the most important thing we can study. And do.
Free and innovative research in the essential spirit of TFF. We congratulate our dear associate as doctor of psychology!

Else Hammerich, TFF board, December 12, 2001
Working with conflicts in Zone 1 – the example of “the war on terrorism”
When international crises occur, we tend to react due to impulsive feelings and mainstream attitudes. Prejudice, enemy images and ideas of retaliation and revenge form public opinions. Then follows the escalation of violent hostilities. The conflict worker, however, has the possibility of using the methods of conflict resolution in order to stay more balanced, think more deeply and come up with sober arguments and alternatives to the use of violence.

Richard Falk, Nov 29, 2001
Defining a Just War
I have never since my childhood supported a shooting war in which the U.S. was involved, The war in Afghanistan against apocalyptic terrorism qualifies in my understanding as the first truly just war since World War II. See some reactions to this controversial analysis in The Nation.

David Krieger, November 18, 2001
The unity of lemmings
Before we reach the edge of the cliff and go over like lemmings, it’s time to stop blindly following the path of military force. We should instead give leadership to strengthening an international system through the United Nations capable of ending terrorism and the conditions that give birth to it.

Daisaku Ikeda, 18 november, 2001
A spiritual response to September 11
For much of our history, humanity has been trapped in vicious cycles of hatred and reprisal. We must redouble our efforts to break this cycle and transform distrust into trust. I believe that this is the most effective and fundamental antidote to terrorism and its repugnant worship of violence.

Maj Britt Theorin, 17 november, 2001

Wilhelm Nolte, TFF associate, October 19, 2001
Geheiligter Krieg?

PressInfo # 137, October 17, 2001
A new Marshall Plan: Advancing human security and controlling terrorism
Our priorities must change now. Instead of a war coalition, rich nations should build a coalition to eradicate hunger, immunize children, provide clean water and combat illiteracy. It would be cheaper, too.
By Michael Renner, TFF Associate, & Dick Bell.

Preventing a terrorist mushroom cloud
Is there any reason to believe that terrorists who hate us would not seek to attack the United States with nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction if they could obtain them?

Daisaku Ikeda, TFF associate, October 9, 2001
Initial perspectives on the terror – a plea for nonviolence
Because we cherish Western civilization, we urge humanity to resolutely pursue the path of nonviolence. We insist that a just and equitable international tribunal be established to try those responsible for acts of war and terrorism.

PressInfo # 134, October 9, 2001
Sweden and September 11
Concrete examples of how the Swedish government chooses to acquiesce in the policies of the U.S. and the European Union (EU) rather than defending the interests of small states and the UN norm of peace by peaceful means.

Maj Britt Theorin, TFF rådgivare & Ingrid Segerstedt-Wiberg, October 1, 2001

The tragedy of a tragedy – global terrorism and repressive globalisation
The hawks may exploit this moment to create a global garrison state. But there are principled alternatives – among them superior ethics.

Understanding terror and making the right choice
A Muslim and researcher of peace and non-violence argues that for peace to prevail at this precarious moment, the conditions for the success of terrorism must be undermined.

PressInfo # 132, Sept. 27, 2001
A just response
The Bush administration lacks the sort of political, moral and spiritual imagination that might help us better cope with this catastrophe. But civil society must try, and be principled. Unilateralism and militarism is unacceptable. By Richard Falk.

Seven steps to improving U.S. and global security
The US response to the attacks should adhere to three basic criteria: it should be legal, moral and thoughtful. Here follow a series of non-military proposals. By TFF associate David Krieger.

Constructive thoughts two weeks after September 11 (B)
The events of that date can be met with humility and soul-searching, with political and legal means, and in a ‘soft’ mode. A series of ideas and proposals.

PressInfo # 129, Sept. 25, 2001
Constructive thoughts two weeks after September 11 (A)
Can something positive come out of the terrible events in New York and Washington on September 11? Can the innocent victims of many nationalities and walks of life be honoured by hard thinking about a more peaceful world?

PressInfo # 128, Sept. 20, 2001
Is it possible for America to say ‘Sorry’?
Do we want to make the situation worse or do we want to take a momentous leap of imagination and reach out to make it better?

David Krieger, TFF associate, September 20, 2001
Reflections on the terrorist attacks
Some Americans are calling for vengeance. But we are fighting phantoms, and our military power is not sufficient to assure an end to future threats.

Peter Jarman, TFF associate, September 17, 2001
The terrorist attacks in the USA – A personal view
I am anxious that rather than addressing the causes of unrest in the world today, the British and American governments may increase this unrest by military actions.

PressInfo # 127 September 12, 2001
For the arrogance of power America now pays a terrible price
Long before George Bush became president America has been turning in on itself, to the point of self-destructiveness. It needs a new way of looking at the world. To meet the attack eye for eye and tooth for tooth, as Gandhi once said, is to make everybody blind.

Bush’s State of the Union Address and the New Imperialism
The failure of the Democratic Party and the mainstream news media to criticize President Bush’s overwrought, alarmingly bellicose State of the Union speech is no less appalling for being predictable. Their vacuous, timid responses remind us once again that democracy and freedom depend ultimately on ideas and the courage to voice them, not just on forms of legality.

LONDON – So far so good, at least on the wider level. While internally Iraq seems on the edge of chaos, the much heralded clash of civilizations between the Muslim and Judaeo-Christian worlds has yet to become apparent. We have anger and despair aplenty in the Arab and Muslim worlds. But very little rushing to the standard and there was no great pilgrimage of warriors to join the fight, as happened when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan twenty years ago, and then, having driven the Red Army out, were left to ferment in that mountainous redoubt. With the armaments supplied by the CIA the mujahidin were transformed into Al Qaeda that became, for a relatively brief moment as these things go, ‘the greatest threat to the homeland that America has ever known.’ Nevertheless a ‘Cold War’ between much of the Muslim world and the West is certainly in full swing. Winston...

Peace will not result from any “peace” plan circulated to date. Neither will it emerge from warfare – as the elites of NATO, EU, Russia, and Ukraine seem to finally recognise after avoidable, unspeakable losses of people, trust and physical, socio-economic destruction. And horse-trading based on military ‘security’ guarantees reveals only peace and conflict illiteracy. TFF is critical of the widespread and severe misuse of the word peace – as if it did not require any knowledge. But we do not engage in geopolitical-military commentarism or dismissive criticism of present-day Realpolitik and its militarist mindset. Indeed, we do not believe that mainstream political and media elites are aware that they know woefully little about peace and peace-making or see it as a professional field. OK, Trump did not get it. But he got a full endorsement of a possible future US regime change in Venezuela. And that is what Ms Machado has advocated. On October 10, 2025, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded its Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado. The citation praised her “tireless work promoting democratic rights.” But Ms Machado has openly called for U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, stating on CBS: “The only way to stop the suppression is by force—U.S. force.” She or her party has received funding from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a U.S. government-backed body known as a CIA front organisation and for supporting regime-change operations worldwide. And in 2018, she sent a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, asking him to use “force and influence” to help dismantle Venezuela’s government—citing alleged ties to terrorism, Iran and narcotrafficking. This year’s NATO Norwegian prize...

She has confronted Israel’s systematic war crimes and crimes against humanity in a truly global outreach. Officially, the drones were not identified. By simply thinking critically – which journalists and selected experts no longer do – there may be a good reason for that. And this article will never be mentioned in Denmark… Drones over Denmark. No damage. No trace. No answers. Yet the headlines scream “Russian threat,” and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen speaks with a certainty that defies logic: “We don’t know they were Russian—but we know Russia is the biggest threat to Europe.” It could be nobody else – unless you make an interest analysis which I did two days ago. This is not security policy. It’s theatre. And the audience is being played. Let’s rewind. These drones—unphotographed, untracked, unclaimed—appear and vanish like ghosts. Airports shut down. Panic spreads. Military budgets swell. And the narrative hardens: Russia is behind it. But what if that’s not just wrong but deliberately misleading? Here’s a hypothesis for...
