By Karin Wegestal MP, the Social Democratic Partyon behalf of the Swedish Committee for Solidarity with the Yugoslav People During the last decade, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has received more than 500,000 refugees from Croatia and Bosnia, and another 300,000 internally displaced persons, mainly from the province Kosovo and Metohia. For a country with about ten million inhabitants, such an influx of homeless people is obviously a very heavy burden – even under peaceful conditions. But in addition to that, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has been the subject to sanctions from the western powers for close to ten years and its infrastructure was badly hurt through Nato’s intense bombardment during 78 days in 1999. The result of all this is that Yugoslavia, once the most developed industrial country in Eastern Europe, is today the poorest country in Europe. In Serbia excluding Kosovo, with about ten million inhabitants and...

Niels Harrit, Associate professor, PhD, Department of Chemistry, University of Copenhagen When viewed in the rear-view mirror of history, the attack on USA on September 11th, 2001 (9/11) might very well prove to be the single most important political event since World War II. It sparked the so-called “war on terror”, which has left a trail of casualties and refugees, with numbers running into the millions. Military expenses and security budgets have soared. As have the number of terrorists. Civil rights have been curtailed for everybody. Fear is prevalent. Our children and grandchildren are left with a less secure world – and a mountain of debt. In spite of this profound impact, the physical and technical realities of 9/11 have never been satisfactorily explained by the US Government. Before considering this claim and its consequences, it is worthwhile reminding ourselves of the “scientific method”, which has served our western societies...

Hvad...

Five months after the Danish daily Jyllands-Posten published 12 caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, controversy over those cartoons is still raging in many Islamic countries. Already dozens of people have been killed in half a dozen countries and demonstrations have taken place in nearly all Islamic countries, from Morocco to Indonesia. The US secretary of state’s statement accusing Iran and Syria of having incited the demonstrations was a cheap and inaccurate shot at two countries which the United States and Israel are targeting at the moment for political reasons. In fact, Iran lagged behind many other countries in reacting to the cartoons, so much so that many newspapers accused the government of indifference. Demonstrations in Iran against the cartoons took place only during the Ashura mourning ceremonies marking the martyrdom of Imam Husayn towards the middle of February. The most violent demonstrations took place in Afghanistan, which is still under...

By Julie Dyer & Michel Tavir TFF Friends Anmeldelsen på dansk March 16, 2006 The book Democratisation in the Middle East, Dilemmas and Perspectives comprises a collection of papers which were originally presented at a Plum Foundation sponsored conference held in Copenhagen in February 2005.  The volume is edited by Birgitte Rahbek, Middle East scholar, author and member of the executive committee of the Plum Foundation. The purpose of this conference was to provide an independent platform for a discussion of recent developments in the Middle East, particularly with respect to the prospects for and the challenges connected with democratisation in the region.   The authors represent a broad spectrum of Middle Eastern and European scholars and others with first-hand knowledge of the region and its history. The contributing authors approach the subject of democratisation from a variety of viewpoints, but are all characterised by their openness toward the concept of a democratic...

Af Mahathir MohamadMalaysias forhenværende premierminister 13. december, 2005 Engelsk original på Information Clearing House, September 16, 2005 People with Blood-Soaked Hands NGOs protesting that Mahathir was invited to speak Jeg vil gerne takke Suhakam for den ære det er, at få lov til at tale til jer, om et emne som I ved mere om og har mere erfaring med, end jeg.
