Born 1919. Served the UN from 1946 to 1986. Former UN Under-Secretary-General with special responsibility for peacekeeping operations with engagement in the conflicts in Congo, Cyprus, Jammu, Kashmir and the Middle East. In the seventies also Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs.
From 1986 to 1996 scholar-in-residence, International Affairs program, The Ford Foundation in New York. He is the author of a biography of Dag Hammarskjold and on Ralph Bunche, his memoir book is "A Life in Peace and War," and he has written extensively on reforms of the UN in general and of peacekeeping in particular.
